Everything we know about the 2024 met gala
This year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art located on 5th Avenue in New York City, will once again be transformed into the venue for a celebration of art, fashion, and innovation, also known as the Met Gala. The highly anticipated event will take place on May 6th, 2024 to celebrate the opening of their spring exhibition, which is also the theme of the gala; “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”.

The Exhibition:
The “Sleeping Beauties” exhibition will be held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from May 10th to September 2nd 2024. Max Hollein, French director and CEO of the MET, noted that "this innovative show goes beyond the limits of our imagination and invites us to experiment with many facets of a piece, to learn more about its history and, in the final analysis, to gain a deeper vision of its beauty”. According to Andrew Bolton, the curator of the show, the exhibition will consist of around 50 historical pieces which cannot be worn due to their fragility and another 250 garments and accessories that will span four centuries. The exhibition will cover over 400 years of fashion history including creations by the likes of Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, and Elsa Schiaparelli as well as more current designers such as Stella McCartney and Phillip Lim.

The “Sleeping Beauties” exhibit will present cutting-edge technology mixed with fashion, from augmented reality to artificial intelligence. Thematic rooms inspired by nature, in which the smells, sounds, textures, and movements will play a big role on the immersive experience felt by visitors will be an important portion of the exhibition.
Photographer Nick Knight and SHOWstudio, along with architecture studio Leong Leong, and Norwegian artist Sissel Tolaas, will contribute their unique vision to design the exhibition. Furthermore, “Sleeping Beauties” will be accompanied by a catalog edited by Andrew Bolton with photographs taken by Nick Knights, published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and distributed by Yale University Press.

The Gala:
The Costume Institute Gala, more prominently known as Met Gala or Met Ball, is not only a celebration of art and fashion but also a fundraising event to help the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This event, which originated in 1948, has a different theme every year which guests are expected to follow. After walking up the “red” carpet on the MET stairs, guests are greeted with an aperitif and then a formal dinner.

The 2024 event and exhibition, will be sponsored by TikTok, Loewe, and Condé Nast. Max Hollein therefore anticipated an experience quite different from the past years which will really invite guests to immerse themselves in all the multi sensory aspects of the garments that will be displayed.
I am excited to see all the incredible looks that will likely be presented at the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibit as well as all the wonderful red carpet looks which will grace the annual Met Gala representing a union between art, fashion and technology in transformative ways which haven’t been seen before.
