travel diaries: Capri

In May I had the incredible opportunity of traveling to Capri with three of my girl friends and it was an amazing experience. I had always dreamt of visiting Capri, and it lived up to every bit of my expectation. Capri is one of my favorite places that I have ever visited. Everything about this destination is great, from the breath-taking views, to the energy of the people there, the food, the nature, and of course, all the amazing stores.

Accomodation

Capri is a very busy destination in the summer, so I recommend booking your hotels as in advance as possible. When my friends and I were booking our trip many hotels did not have any more rooms available. We ended up staying at a beautiful hotel called Villa Brunella. The whole experience was great. The staff at the hotel were all very nice and the concierge was very helpful whenever we needed help with anything. The hotel is more or less a 10 minute walk from the center of town and the views from there are gorgeous. The image above is the view I had from my room.

On the day we arrived in Capri we had lunch at the hotel restaurant while we waited for our rooms to be ready. The food was amazing. We all shared a delicious spaghetti vongole, burrata, and a spaghetti with cherry tomatoes. One of the best parts about Capri is all the delicious foods, almost any of the restaurants you go to there will be amazing.

Activities

There are so many fun activities to do in Capri from spending the day at the beach, to having drinks at the Quissisana terrace, to chartering a boat for the day and going around the island, there was never be a dull moment on our trip.

Spending the Day at La Fontelina

One of my favorite activities in Capri was spending the day at La Fontelina. La Fontelina is a restaurant and private beach in which you can rent out chairs and sunbeds and spend the day there tanning and swimming in the ocean. It is not a conventional beach in which you just walk into the water from the sand, but rather is located on many rocks and you have stairs to take you down into the water.

One major piece of advice I would give regarding La Fontelina is to wear tennis shoes when you go. I wasn't aware of this on the first day we went, but to get to La Fontelina you have to walk down a very big and steep hill. On the first day I wore sandals and I slipped and cut my knee. After that day I wore tennis shoes every time we went down there.

Boat Charter

In my opinion if you are going to Capri it is definitely worth chartering a boat at least one day to go around the island. My friends and I actually ended up getting a boat on two different days; one day we went around Capri and Anacapri, and the next we took the boat to Positano, walked around there, had lunch, and then came back. These were by far my two favorite days in Capri. A must do thing if you get a boat is to visit the Grotto Azzurra, or Blue Grotto. When visiting this beautiful cave, you leave your boat outside the cave and one of the men who work there take you inside the cave in the little row boat. Technically, you aren’t meant to swim in the grotto, but the man the guided us inside said he would let us do it. Observation: I’m terrified of fish but obviously wanted to experience this. The second I jumped in the water my friend and I saw a huge jellyfish floating near us. I have never jumped out of the water so quickly in my life, haha.

BOAT DAY 1: GOING AROUND CAPRI AND ANACAPRI

BOAT DAY 2: GOING TO POSITANO

I highly recommend that if you get a boat to spend the day in Positano, or if you are going to Positano for that matter, to visit Il San Pietro di Positano. This is a beautiful hotel that I believe is worth visiting. My friends and I made a stop there for lunch and then after lunch we went up to the terrace to see the gorgeous view.

Cooking Classes

My friends and I decided that for one of the days on our trip we wanted to have a chill day around town. For lunch, we decided to book a cooking lesson and make our own lunch. We took the class with a company called “The Blue Kitchen Capri” and it was so much. This is a nice relaxing activity to do which I definitely recommend, especially since Italy is known for their incredible food.

Shopping

Not only does Capri have incredible beaches, restaurants, and views, it is also filled with gorgeous shops. My friends and I decided to have one relaxing day in which we could go shopping around town; this was the same day we did our cooking lesson. There are many designer stores, but also so many unique Italian stores which are worth seeing.

I loved this set I saw at Missoni

I bought these beautiful sandals at a store near my hotel where they make the sandals custom to your feet

I also got this cool hat I found at a boutique

PArties

My friends and I only went out once while we were in Capri but that one night was so much fun. We went to a traditional Italian club called Anema e Core Capri. This was a tavern style club with live music and the vibe in there was amazing.

I hope you guys enjoyed reading a bit about this amazing trip to Capri. This was one of my favorite trips I have gone on so far and I highly recommend going to Capri for anyone that is looking for a fun, calm, summer destination.

Xoxo,
Valentina Vontobel
